  1. Mycoplasms are the smallest known 
  2. free-living cells. They are closely related
  3. to BACTERIA but lack a cell wall, which means
  4. they can change their shape and are able to
  5. pass through fine filters that would normally
  6. retain bacteria. Some are saprophytic (they
  7. live on dead or decaying organic material),
  8. others are parasitic, living on man or 
  9. animals, causing pneumonia-like diseases.
